Fringe Day 3: Bold and Spiky (3.5/5), Miss April Day (4/5)

You know, I could really use a lie down so let’s just bang this out quick.
Bold and Spiky
More performance poetry? How did I do that? Maybe my brain was still weary from Jem Rolls Up, maybe I had a mild malaise from seeing them the year previous, but we had a big fan in our troupe and we really had to go again and so we did. They are enjoyable and charismatic, and while they are arguably more entertaining that Jem Rolls I found that I was left feeling a bit wanting. They put on a good show, no doubt about it, but if you’re going in for poetry you’re probably up to the challenge of Jem Rolls and thats got a good bit more meat on its bones than this. Also, last years show was funnier. Should I hold that against them? I don’t know. 3.5/5
Miss April Day’s School for Burgeoning Young Strippers
A one woman show featuring song and spoken word, the spoken word bits are fantastic and the song needs a better voice. However, the narrative is deeply engaging, revealing all the issues you’d expect to surround the world of being a stripper and presenting them in a compelling and emotionally involving way. While there isn’t much skin - perhaps against the theme - the actress is quite lovely and full of charm, and really the only down side of the whole thing is that the wittily composed musical numbers are not given a proper delivery. You admire her anyway.
The end of the play features the biggest emotional challenge I’ve had all fringe, and while it’s tamer than the name implies, I adore Miss April Day. 4/5
