Fringe Day 3 Addendum: Hot Pink Bits (4.5/5)
Aug 22nd, 2007 by Edward Pollard
I left this one off the last post as I didn’t have the time to express my giddy pleasure appropriately. But, how can you dislike a play where you walk out with 2 flavoured condoms, some lube and a light-up vibrator? So note now that I was bribed. This is fringe payola. What a scandal!
Hot Pink Bits is a high energy, one woman show discussing the ins and outs and ups and downs of human sexuality, particularly the funny, weird, or disgusting parts of it. The performance is the kind where you’d best strap yourselves into the seat lest you be blown out the door by the intensity of the work. This does wonders to carry the show marvelously, and despite brief interludes down reprehensible paths - sex with amputees, roman showers (that’s vomit, folks) - the experience is one of mirth, wonder, amusement, and a wee touch of introspection towards ones own sexuality.
Brush up on your sex trivia and you could get a little gift pack from the fine folks at fromaphrodite.com, which makes this the first fringe show I’ve ever seen with a sponsorship deal. It’s a precarious idea that works excellently in this context. The closing of the show features a poor bastard dragged on stage (which once again was ME) to perform an homage to strip tease. Festooned in hot pink cowboy gear I bobbled across the stage with candor and something rather completely unlike grace. Maybe that should drag the score down a bit? But I didn’t get to watch it, so I guess not.
